There were plenty of people stacking up extra SCSI drives in external cases, so you'd think there'd have been a trade-off point where recasing to a 486-style tower and using internal drives was cheaper, and definitely less hassle with cabling and multiple power switches to attend to.
I could see an aftermarket vendor specializing in pre-built "turnkey" systems for people who ran specific intensive software.
