Friends, when you see people at the top levels of the US government that are this obviously corrupt: https://www.finance.senate.gov/chairmans-news/justice-thomas-did-not-repay-substantial-portion-of-267230-loan-finance-committee-investigation-reveals-failed-to-report-forgiven-debt-on-ethics-filings-raising-questions-about-tax-compliance I want you to remember that this *is not normal*.

A few weeks ago, I was on a trip with a program officer from the National Science Foundation. There were some complications surrounding transportation, and for a while it looked like he might need to *contact his ethics officer* to ask for an *exemption* so that I could give him a ride in my *rented Toyota Corolla* to the *airport*. (As it turns out, a different plan worked out, so said ethics waiver was not required.)

The US federal government is full of people with high ethical standards who take conflicts of interest, even minor ones, completely seriously, as they should. Let's not rot from the head down by ignoring ethical standards for the people at the top of the government, please.
