Police attacked protestors, 58 of whom ended up in the hospital, and the episode came to be known as Bloody Sunday. Black women were not only among the crowds — they were also behind the scenes, feeding protestors, organizing meetings and more. “You may see the flashy protest, but below the surface is a strong collective of people, Black women usually, that are creating the networks, trust, community-building and organizational literacy for something [like this] to be able to take place,” Ashley D.
