apparently my cable modem no longer has a static default password but it's instead based on the serial number, which you have to look at the bottom of the modem for.

this is good, except for the fact that it makes you change the password. you had a perfectly good password printed on the bottom of the modem!

i'm going to tape the new password to the bottom of the modem
