Figured out I need to use nix-env -i to install but vmware tools isn't working, installed a few vm tools but none of them are allowing the auto resizing of my guest OS in VMware, couldn't even find a GUI package manager - installed apt but that doesn't work. Probably better for someone a little more advanced than me.
