Same. I've done some freelance writing work and, not having any references or experience, I went with a pay if you want model at first. I also had no idea what to charge for my services. It didn't bother me to work for donation as I needed to get my name out there, but even though everyone agreed that I 'should' be paid for my work and they loved it, only one person eventually stepped up and compensate my work fairly.
There is a large subset of people who will take things for free, just because they can.
