"Patches welcome" can perfectly be interpreted as a "Fuck off", given the right context. You seem to assume that the "Fuck off" context is always fine, because of the very nature of everybody's voluntary involvement .

It is a bit like defending being rude whenever you can. Sure you can, but that does not make it ok.

As a disclaimer, I think this cuts both ways as bug reports can be rude and opinionated, too.
