I work in a courthouse. Today a memo arrived informing justices in my state that they are *required* to observe the gender identity of any party to a case, or criminal defendant who comes before them. If a man is accused of rape, the presiding judge must respect his right to be called female in front of the woman he assaulted.
A condescending poster was included for distribution, listing examples of pronouns that such people can demand to be called. Not only she/he. They/them. Zie/zim. Pan/pan. To name a few.
I didn’t have my phone with me or I’d have taken a pic. I’m deeply concerned that the decree will extend to non-judicial employees.
If I am ordered to defer to a transgender identity, what recourse do I have? If it comes to losing my job, is there legal aid that will represent someone in a situation like this?
