Lynch's version is chock full of visual blunt force instruments - he practically slapped a sign saying rain-swept Britain on his depiction of Caladan and industrial Germany on Giedi Prime. But those visual cues did work: you *feel* like the Atreides are literal fishes out of water the second they step on Arakkis because of it.
Without this, Villeneuve needed to do far more with the characterisation than he did. It needed to be deep.
