There are trade offs depending which option you go with. If you only intend to send and receive lightning payments I would recommend using Breez or Phoenix wallet. They are both very good non-custodial wallets and they work by running a lightning node on your mobile device. They automatically open channels on the fly as you need them (if your existing channel doesn’t have adequate liquidity to handle a payment, for instance), although when that happens you pay extra fees for the channel open. But they’re great wallets. Breez is my personal favorite between the two.
If you plan to do more than just send/receive payments, like routing, using your node as a backend for BTCPay or LNbits, etc, then you’ll need to run your own node. I would say don’t shy away from it if you’re interested in doing it. It’s a great way to learn. But it is a more involved process.
