Well, console_putstr only checks values for 0x00, as it takes a NULL-terminated string. console_print interprets certain control codes, such as linefeed and carriage return and horizontal tab. That's a sort of middle-ground, mostly for kernel messages. An actual terminal emulator would interpret ANSI escape sequences using a state machine, and alter the text screen memory directly.
