There was a time in 2010s where the belief was that we’d see a new wave of consumer hardware tech such as 3D printing and consumer drones would outshine software. Sadly neither took hold.

Consumer drones ended up being most useful as selfie camera which if “smart” could follow you around. Cool but not enough to sustain a VC funded industry. So the market leaders are now pivoting to enterprise and business scenarios
