To me these jars remind me of how when there is a funeral everyone brings food for the family. Presumably because they are grieving and to save them from the work of cooking, but if you've seen the heaps of food it's something more than that. The food and flowers are a visual symbol of how much the dead person is missed and loved.
Or when there is a tragedy in a city and at the location of the tragedy people heap up flowers, and candles and cards... it's a tangible expression of love.
