This article seems to suggest the mental healthcare system in the UK shares many of the deficiencies seen in the US—in summary, relying on a punitive criminal justice system to address behaviors that are symptoms of illness rather than immorality. As individualism and wealth disparity grow in our societies, I fear social services will worsen for those with serious mental illness who are often poor, politically powerless, and unable to effectively advocate for themselves.
