I tell my younger friends and coworkers the exact opposite.

I tell them to go get a passport and travel like hell while they are young. Live it up while you have the health and energy to make the most of it.

I ask them, "Do you really want to be 65 years old before you have the chance to take trains around Europe?

Do you really want to miss out on backpacking through Southeast Asia, staying up through the night partying and dancing with other international travelers?

Do you really want to see the sights from a tour bus or would you rather be hiking and biking your way through the ruins?

In my 20s and 30s, I quit a couple of "good jobs with matching 401(k)s and healthcare benefits" to travel for months at a time. I do not regret one minute of it.

I think about the hardships of traveling (the canceled/delayed flights, the heavy luggage/backpack, the stress of finding lodging, the heat/cold, perpetually getting lost, the inevitable bout of food poisoning, etc.). Most 25 year olds can handle all that much better than a 65 year old or a 40 year old with kids in tow.

Do it now! Live your life! Eat desert first! Put the money you save by traveling on a budget in your 20s towards your retirement full of fond travel memories.

"Living it up is a big kick. It's good for you." Tones on Tail
