The looking back into an irretrievable past and an uncertain future.
The story is what got me going and whilst it goes a bit Moby Dick with a lengthy set of digressions, the doldrums are not as insurmountable and I made it to the other side, pleased to have done so. I think the characters are what kept me in there because the book is in 2nd person (you do this) and that was quite disconcerting for me putting myself into that man's shoes rather than seeing from afar.
