But behind the beauty, we’re losing over 100 hectares of rice fields every year in Indonesia. The conversion of these vital fields into housing, industrial zones, and tourism is happening at an alarming rate. In the past decade Indonesia’s rice field decreased by more than 16%, shrinking from 8.1 mill ha in 2010 to around 6.8 mill ha, today.
This decline in agricultural land puts us at greater risk of food insecurity and now increasingly relies on imports from neighbor.
