At times, can that turn out to be counterproductive? Sure. But drolly reading a letter can lose listeners at a record pace.
If someone specifically submits a letter to be used on the show, they really don't get the right to decide how it is handled. That's the trade-off.
The show is a healthy part entertainment, and not all jokes land.
