In my early 20’s I was part of a fansubbing community that singlehandedly paved the way in my country for subtitled movies and TV in a country dominated by dubbing. The site was eventually shut down (when it stopped being useful to the movie industry and they started using the same “day and date with the US but with subtitles” model) under legal threats of copyright infringement. AI tech companies are now doing this on a global scale by stealing content to train AI, and they pay no price at all.
