I just replied to someone in a random thread that popped up who was suggesting that jazz is music to analyze and pop is literally meaningless background drivel or whatever.

I have done a lot of work in studios in my career and my experience is quite different.

The more "pop" the artist wants to go, the more thought goes into it. The level of meticulous decision making is really beyond anything else I've done. You have to be so exacting and precise and every little aspect has to work.

By contrast, jazz sessions tend to be pretty relaxed, not much rehearsal, and what you're going to end up doing is much more rote and autopilot. There are exceptions, and these usually end up being way better records, but I can usually expect to go in to a jazz session and just kind of follow the standard pattern and be asked back for the next session, when I do a pop record I really have to be serious.

That's just my experience of it
