I dunno. Seems a step back to me.

And the same rule — no oaths — would make weddings merely get-together parties, neither partner making any public commitment.

I do think the hope for a social rule/norm that no one will ever violate is a vain hope. Of course some will betray their oaths. The problem is not the oath, IMO.
