I think people should talk about self hosting more in the context of reusing old computers. Say you upgrade your gaming rig, it was previously ddr3 and now you have a motherboard, cpu and a psu laying around. You don’t need the shiniest rack servers to self host. Using old computers to host a couple game servers, or something like
https://www.firefly-iii.org/ is fairly trivial. I don’t personally use truenas scale but I admire it for giving people a web ui to do stuff with ZFS and the fact you can install containerized applications. Your zpool doesn’t have to be massive, you can pick up a couple of drives (2, 4, 6) and make a small pool. Backups don’t have to be this huge thing either.
