Thankfully a lot more comms are encrypted these days, you should ensure your comms are encrypted - remember that without key verification your comms are not encrypted. You are the one that needs to do the key verification, out of band.
Encryption doesn't protect metadata, and creates a lot more of it. Metadata is useful without content. I'm endlessly concerned with the silos of metadata powering most services - again, consider and be skeptical.
