AFAIK most incidents have much simpler stories. People are cheated into giving access to their bank accounts or transferring their savings. Then they are blackmailed into doing something like this.

I have to agree about "the voice of authority" vulnerability which gets exploited - common scenarios include telling people their accounts are compromised and they have to transfer funds to "secure account" or that they are suspected of donating to Ukraine and their accounts have to be checked. Callers often name themselves as law enforcement or FSB.

I received such call once and the police captain was quite convincing, he even had name of existing police officer who really did work at the department they named and it was in my district.
