for 2d it's making a robust builds(rigs) beforehand and knowing how to make seamless animations with them. Usually done in something like Harmony.
for 3d it's knowing how to capture mocap inexpensively (the software stack for monocular mocap is kind of aids), knowing how to process it, and knowing how to implement it. This is gonna be pose est software of choice, motionbuilder, and blender/maya
