After a year of riding in the city, breaking so the pedal would be in the position I want to start again becomes a second nature. I don't even think of it anymore.
Not only the angle of the pedal but also which side of the road I need the "up" pedal to be: here we have very strong rains and deep gutters on the sides of the road, so if you are on the side of the bikepath that is closest to the walkway it is often at quite a steep angle and you need to make sure you put your foot down on the road side, not the walkway side. But it is a reflex you acquire quite easily.

Thank you for the gearing advice. It is an issue I hadn't thought about and I like to cover distance on my week ends. What gear ratio would you say is best for a beginner, Buenos Aires being a mostly flat city?
