I guess I'm interested in the question of the origin of the parameter values, which, as I understand it, need to be measured experimentally, as there is no means to calculate them from theory alone?

Thanks for the link! It is very thorough in explaining the nature of these parameters.

One remark struck me as perhaps somehow outdated:
