How is it that cling film (aka plastic wrap) is engineered such that it simultaneously:

a) sticks in all the place you don't want (including to itself)

b) doesn't stick in all the places you do want (including to itself)

(For bonus points, might it be possible to harness this power somehow, in the manner of strapping buttered toast to the back of a cat?)
