I truly think that most of us drastically underestimate how much of an existential threat to civilization the advertising industry is. 90% of the utter crap products on the market would be unable to exist if not for advertising. How much product turnover is driven by advertising? How much conspicuous consumption? How much waste? GOTTA HAVE THIS YEAR'S MODEL. Buy this, buy that, buy more, more, more. Throw away what you have so that you have room to buy more. Never mind whether you need it. Just so long as you keep buying more.
