Pondering what might be possible if OpenType Layout kerning classes were defined for glyph quadrants instead of sides. So, e.g., ƒ could be in the f class for top left, top right, and lower right quadrants, but in the j class for lower left class. Kerning pairs would, I suppose, need to define the active quadrants.
Hmm. Maybe one of those situations where the solution I imagine for my current headache is more and worse headaches.
