Open source is not supposed to be ego chasing, it's a thankless effort. I'd argue most private OSS projects are a single developer and maybe a maintainer or two. The best thing a contributor gets is a thank you on a release note. That's how it's always been though, the owner must always take responsibility for the direction of the project.
