I found the best way to connect with people with similar interests is:
1. Search for hashtags related to your interests.
2. Click on the "Follow hashtag" button. (this will add all posts with those hashtags into your feed)
3. Follow anyone from your feed who seems interesting.
4. Mute or block any accounts that appear to be abusing the hashtag(s).
There are no algorithms boosting specific posts, so you end up getting exactly what you ask for and nothing else.
