Shadowman311 (npub1khq…6n2t) Ukraine was arguably the heart of the USSR. Khrushchev and Brezhnev were Ukrainian. Ukraine was enlarged and industrialized under the USSR. It was something like the USSR’s “New Americans” project, it was strengthened to try and balance the RSFSR with the rest of the union. A lot of Ukrainian nationalism is Soviet and arguably their feeling of superiority and resistance against subordination to Russia comes from its Soviet legacy, and not it’s proximity to the West.
Galicia was nothing and could have been Polish or German. Going from two heads of the USSR and one of its most important regions to the dog of Moscow has to be hard however.
