supersid (nprofile…tffa) Not sure the problem is the RPG maker combat so much as most game's usages of it. Far too many RPG maker projects use the bare-bones frame and nothing else, with the default skills and UI and such. Generally a problem with RPG maker to begin with, a lot of projects made in it aren't exactly notable or exist only for a specific non-gameplay focused purpose (i.e. meme games or H-games).
The actual systems though are all basic RPG systems, the likes of which most turn based RPGs use regardless of being made in the engine or not. Guess making it compelling is more about understanding how to make an interesting RPG rather than the combat in particular, since the genre by nature has not very engaging combat by nature. You could always get fancy and import other styles of combat system like Touhou Mother does with Mother's combat, but that's a bit beyond the scope of simply making combat not suck.
