So basically he wanted to cheap out on every single part of this expedition and wanted to surround himself with yes men so no one would tell him what a colossal fuck up this would turn out to be. When he was finally forced to hire someone who knew what they were doing he was told how badly he was fucking up, but he'd already spent money on stuff and wasn't about to change his plans so he fired the knowledgeable employee and kept the yes men to fluff him.
