I lived in Altadena up until third grade. I had Black classmates and a Black teacher. On the first day of school in second grade, when I had a Black teacher, I came home and said, "My teacher has a really dark suntan." That is how much I knew about race as a kid. It is unfortunate we cannot preserve that innocence.

I used to teach Octavia Butler's novel Wild Seed. That novel has a lot of interesting things to imagine about race and being human. She is very important.
