People are currently grumpy at VW for being both shady about and inept with vehicle location data. If you buy a vehicle with a GPS unit then even if it doesn't have a network connection they can download and store those data if you go to a dealership for maintenance.
That said, most of us use Google or Apple Maps for turn by turn directions and are sending those data to at least one hypercorp.
I'm planning to regularly travel out of cell service and it's been fun dusting off the paper maps.
