I think this here sums up how it ended badly in the USSR. An absurd level of control to prevent exploitation. Probably sincere at some point.

The thing is communism only managed to (try to) take root in the places that were utterly ravaged by colonialism / empires & capitalism. Russia, China, Cuba, etc. so I can understand their fear that letting even one ounce of private entrepreneurship exist could progressively lead back to serfdom .
