the ADL is a zionist organization first and foremost, they are not only pro israel, and define jewish interests itself as being identical with state of Israel and so for them anti-zionism even coming from jews is inherently anti-semitic, they're also anti-communist, generally pro War etc. And have made their horrendous pro capitalist, pro imperialist positions known on numerous occasions.
Their entire MO is unnuanced and bad faith discussion, and while they certainly do go after genuine anti-semitic targets ( they have their interns do that I'm sure ) this gives them a level of legitimacy that they can then use to smear anti-zionists and left wingers gentile and jew alike.
Problem is ADL has been in public life for a long ass time and their conception of jewish identity and anti-semitism has basically been hegemonic liberal NGO sphere, and so we see ADL style rhetoric coming directly from the USG and heads of universities condemning anti-semitism, mixing real incidents of racist harassment with slander, smearing pro palestine protestors, Muslims/Arabs.
this also has implications with anti-racism, since ADL has been so hegemonic and continues to be the so called "jewish leaders" interviewed by corporate media, even though they are a group of unelected right wing concern trolls
tbh i think a lot of people's anti-racism has been deeply influenced by the ADL approach: bad faith, alarmist, unnuanced s charges of anti-semitisms that somehow always benefits Israel
