Even an iPhone if used properly (and that means not using the default camera app) can deliver great images at night – here’s one of mine from the aurora night in May 🙂
But yes, if he has a good DSLR & tripod, then a tracking mount would be a really good way to get him started on astrophotography. It also involves some faffing around in post-processing, but if he’s anything like me, he’ll enjoy that part too 🤪
