To mix my metaphors, 2020 felt like we collectively almost woke from a dream, but we didn't wake, and then went back to sleep more soundly again.

That going back to sleep didn't happen by accident, it took a lot of hard work by a lot of propagandists and spinners and bribery-artists and thugs to make it happen. As everyone who works in infrastructure knows, it takes enormous amounts of work by a lot of smart diligent people to make the world outside our windows keep being the same.

I think it's not going to be the only time though. A lot of people are burned out or arrested, but it shook a lot of things up, created a lot of networks and radicalised a lot of people. There'll be a next time, and I suspect it'll be sooner than a lot of powerful people are hoping.
