The angle of saying that ad blockers are overreaching because its not an ad is IMO just a strawman. They have since long been used to block all kinds of unwanted parts of the web.
I would also disagree that there is such a thing as private telemetry.
I find the comparison to knifes also falls short, as knifes are banned in lots of places!! One of the few they are not is at home.
I do understand wanting to get telemetry, but I haven't seen that being useful for the public.
