I am still working on the nostrcheck upload system.
Now when you upload a GIF the system detects if it is animated or not. If it is animated it is transformed into an optimized MP4, less weight, more compatibility. If it is static it becomes a JPG (until most clients support WEBP correctly).
About the public gallery. Remember, you can upload files and use them in nostr, FREE, no registration required:

The private galleries, you can decide which images will or will not be shown in the gallery, for practical purposes you can use your uploaded files (hidden) for DM's without danger. Example with mine:
