An area roughly the size of New Jersey has become a “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico, providing little to no oxygen for fish and other marine life, NOAA says. The dead zone is a yearly occurrence in the Gulf, but this year is much bigger than usual, covering four million acres, the 12th largest one the agency has recorded over 38 years.
