I especially love that their loss so long ago is our win today. In my area it's painfully obvious why so many hoards of small coins date from the late 400s - people buried them for safekeeping as the Empire fell and never made it back. The humble ink pot full of gold is a cliché around here. But I would love to know the stories behind stuff like the Scandinavian tool chest or jewel-encrusted rings. Someone looked for those things no doubt, but could never retrieve them.
