When I was in the third grade (8 years old, 1973) we took a field trip to the public library and we all got library cards. We WALKED 1.1 miles, including across two highway ramps to get there and then walked back to school. This cost the school zero dollars. I think if someone suggested this today, the parents would howl. But I still have a public library card, and the walking helped to emphasize that it was something worth getting. #libraries
