The sad fact is that we can't fit many more services on some parts of the network (I write this on the train waiting in the queue to get through Deansgate Station, we doesn't stop here any more to ease the flow) and there are far too many single points of failure that can take out an entire region (the seawall at Dawlish and the line between Preston and Lancaster being but two). The country needs new lines but the preferred option is more motorways and by-passes.
