So in fairness to the local store staff, when I visited and told them the problem, they got another item out of stock, opened it, and gave me the spare part I needed. They also admitted that online was useless and it caused them a lot of grief.

But I spent 90+ minutes on a chat, call, visit to the store (all steps that Argos *told* me to do, in that order) to fix a problem that was 100% their fault. I think a letter asking for a 50% refund is worth a chance.
