in my area we get 3 containers for the house, black one for all rubbish, blue for separated recycling and brown for plant materials - they are collected on alternate weeks (black one week, brown and blue the other). Public places don't have anywhere for separating recyclables (maybe as there's no way of making sure they are used properly, whereas if you put the wrong things in a container outside the house its rejected and you are stuck with the contents until its sorted)
