The thing about Bluesky is, they don't just tolerate censorship. They 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦 it. It's not a social platform; it's an anti-social platform.

People may change, but after a century of heavy censored media and smear campaigns about fringe content just as free media was getting started with access to the printing press, the public just isn't largely looking for unfiltered content. They want to not be censored themselves, perhaps, but are often willing to accept it instead of tolerating people they disagree with getting to speak.

Some of the work on voluntary algorithms is likely to help us here, as is the broad functionality of Nostr being built out as more than just social media. People need smooth access to feeds that let them cultivate what they want to see. They're somewhat okay with the fact that the web isn't itself censored, but many sure clamor for censored search results that don't have them clicking links with porn banner ads and "malinformation."

To some extent, for Nostr to really reach the masses, it'll need to allow them to live in a bubble. As Nostr's not going to create that bubble for them, we need to at least allow them the ability to make it for themselves. Or be content in them not using it for the time being.

I can't say I'm thrilled with this, but there's only so much you can do when people insist on being sheltered, short of dragging them kicking and screaming. Which we don't have the power to do, and probably shouldn't.
